Pricing Power: Turn Commercial Discipline Into Growth
Ask most executives where growth comes from and they'll point to new products or new markets. Ask their P&L and it often points somewhere less glamorous: price. A single point of pricing improvement typically drops more to the bottom line than a single point of volume — yet pricing remains the most under-managed lever in the commercial toolkit.
Why Pricing Erodes Quietly
Pricing power rarely collapses in one dramatic moment. It leaks:
- Discount creep. Reps discount to close, quarter after quarter, until the "standard" price exists only on paper.
- Packaging drift. Customers buy bloated bundles at flat prices while the value they actually use narrows — you're giving away margin with every renewal.
- Cost pass-through failure. Input costs rise; prices don't. Each year of unrecovered inflation is a permanent margin donation.
- Inconsistent execution. Two similar customers pay wildly different prices because nobody owns the pricing architecture.
None of these show up as a crisis. Together, they can quietly surrender 3–5 points of margin — often the difference between a good year and a great one.
Building Pricing Power: Three Moves
1. Know what each customer values — and charge for it
Pricing power starts with understanding willingness to pay at a granular level. Segment customers not by size or industry, but by value drivers: What outcomes do they buy? What would they pay to get them faster, with less risk, with more support? Then align packaging and price metrics to those drivers. The goal is a menu where customers self-select into the right tier — and where your best value is also your best margin.
2. Put guardrails around discounting
Discretion without discipline destroys price. Leading firms implement:
- Approval thresholds that escalate with discount depth — small discounts are fast, deep ones require justification.
- Give-and-get negotiation — every concession has a price: longer term, larger commitment, reduced scope.
- Win/loss analytics on discount — track whether discounted deals actually close faster or just close cheaper. The data usually surprises.
3. Make price increases routine, not exceptional
Companies that raise prices only in emergencies train customers to expect flat pricing forever. Companies with pricing power treat increases as operations: annual reviews tied to value delivered and cost reality, communicated with confidence and evidence. A 2–3% annual increase, compounded, transforms a P&L over five years — and customers barely notice when it's tied to visible value.
The Organizational Piece
Pricing fails when it belongs to no one. Sustainable pricing power needs:
- An owner. Someone — a person or a small team — accountable for the pricing architecture, not just approving discounts.
- A rhythm. Quarterly pricing reviews with sales leadership, examining discount patterns, win rates by price band, and competitive moves.
- Sales enablement. Reps need to sell value, not price. That means battlecards built on customer economics, not feature lists — and compensation that rewards margin, not just revenue.
The Bottom Line
Pricing power isn't a market gift — it's an operating discipline. The firms that compound it treat price as a strategic asset: measured, managed, and improved with the same rigor as any other P&L lever. In a world where volume growth is expensive and uncertain, it's often the highest-return investment a commercial organization can make.
